The 68th UN General Assembly has announced that 2015 is the International Year of Soils, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of soils for food security and ecosystem functions.
For his degree dissertation, Dan – keen in researching and studying soils – set up a pioneering study that observes how roots influence the factors of resistance in soils.
Aims of the Project:
To investigate the influence of tap-root tapering on soil erodibility.
Why tap-roots? Tap-roots are relatively understudied, compared to the more commonly researched fibrous morphologies.
Why root tapering? Well, there's been a lot of research on root depth and root diameter, but they have largely been separated. Root tapering is one way of soldering both the lateral and vertical components of roots together.
